If your partner snores, most likely it’s difficult for you to sleep. Sleep deprivation affects you on so many different levels between concentration, mood, appetite and more. If you’re the snoring culprit, most likely you’re not getting the kind of rest you deserve either.
Going to your conventional doctor for a remedy will most likely develop into an expensive sleep study to assure you’re not suffering from sleep apnea. If you go through this study, and find you don’t have sleep apnea, but you’re still snoring and disrupting your and your partner’s sleep, it may be time to seek out alternative remedies.
There are many alternative and natural methods you can try to help keep you from snoring (or, at least, to keep from snoring so much), but for the sake of this particular blog, we’ll focus on massage and essential oils.
So, what is snoring caused by? Well, there are a few different factors. Here’s a list:
- Age
- Obesity
- Alcohol Consumption
- Clogged Nasal Passages
- Dehydration Before Bed
- Sleep Apnea
Now, if you’ve already deduced you don’t have sleep apnea, the others listed above may be the culprit. There are certain essential oils that can help alleviate snoring, or even stop it.
Sweet Marjoram has a warm scent that may remind you of nutmeg or cardamom. This essential oil has been used as a natural analgesic, antiseptic, and expectorant. It’s also great for treating breathing difficulties. Massage the oil using a carrier oil (we recommend Jojoba) and massage it into your chest, shoulders and neck.
You can also gargle a few drops of Marjoram added to a cup of water for three minutes before bed, or diffuse the essential oil. Whatever works for best for your nighttime routine.
If you have lavender and lemon essential oils as well, you can create a wonderful anti-snore massage oil. Here’s a great recipe:
- 8 drops Lavender
- 4 drops Marjoram
- 3 drops Lemon
- ¼ cup carrier oil (such as Jojoba)
As part of a long-term snoring treatment, a myofascial massage will work wonders around the sinus area to help relieve pressure in the sinus cavity. This type of massage, combined with essential oils, will help you stop snoring. You may want to use a neti pot before or after the massage to clear out your nasal cavities too. This, combined with the other methods together should get you and your partner restfully (and quietly) sleeping in no time!
