Halloween is a time when people actually enjoy getting their wits scared out of them, eat copious amounts of sugar, and kick start an entire season of poor eating choices (Thanksgiving, all the religious holidays, New Year’s, Valentine’s Day, ending with Easter). When Halloween ends, the stress of the holiday season begins, and leaves you less time for you to relax and recharge. How do you avoid this snowball that can potentially last for four months?
Begin your day with exercise, because if there ever was a day for an invigorating workout, this is it! It doesn’t matter what you do as long as you move for 30 minutes and give your body the boost it needs for the upcoming day.
Have your normal meals as you normally would. Plan to have a nutritious dinner to allow yourself some leniency if that snickers bar is calling out your name! Eating till you’re full before going out trick-or-treating will keep your will power strong. If you just can’t resist, make a plan before going out to only have 3 pieces of candy, or just 2 fun size bars. Be specific, because with a plan, you’ll be more likely to stay on task.
If you’re going to a Halloween party, keep your hands busy with your purse in one hand and a beverage in the other. If your hands are free, you’ll be more likely to eat even if you’re not hungry. Stand as far away from the food as possible, and if you are hungry, put all of the food you plan to eat on one plate and visualize what you will be eating. This will stop you from overeating and unconscious snacking.
If you plan to hand out treats for the night, consider non candy items like small toys, stickers, temporary tattoos or bags of pretzels. Kids love these too-if these are options, they’ll take them! It gives the kids the joy of trick-or-treating, without setting an unhealthy habit.
If you’ll be doing the chaperoning during the trick-or-treating, look at it as an opportunity to exercise together with your child. Walk door to door as opposed to driving, and, if it’s a nice night, be prepared to go around a few blocks! Your child will get more candy, and you’ll get more exercise.
At this point in the year, you probably know what you’ll be doing for the upcoming holidays. If it’s going to be particularly stressful, go ahead and book your massage now. If you’ve already booked the massage, you’ll be more likely to take care of yourself when you most need it.
