Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)

If you are planning a surgery and would like MLD after surgery please schedule at least 2 weeks in advance. Consult with your doctor and make a post surgery plan.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a type of gentle massage which is intended to encourage the natural drainage of the lymph, which carries waste products away from the tissue and back toward the heart. Manual Lymphatic Drainage can be used for general health, recovery from surgery, Lymphedema and Lipoedema. We will address each below and how this massage is helpful but there are some serious contraindications that are a hard stop on getting this type of therapy.

“A Contraindication is a specific situation in which a drug, procedure, or surgery should not be used because it may be harmful to the person.” The major contraindications to manual lymphatic drainage are acute congestive heart failure, acute renal failure, active blood clots, active infection, active bleeding and undiagnosed cancer. If none of these are present, MLD is a safe and gentle modality appropriate and indicated for many conditions, and situations. It is the best option for reducing edema and swelling. It is imperative that you let your massage therapist know if any of the above contraindications apply to you.

For General Health

People enjoy Manual Lymphatic Drainage to help flush toxins, amp up their immunity, and lower water weight and bloating. On top of that, this is a very gentle massage, almost hypnotic. General MLD can be used for this need.

For Recovery from Surgery

Expectation of Client for Post-Surgical Care

The first visit we require an hour appointment to review the lymph system and self manual lymphatic drainage as well as time to perform MLD and access the state of your skin and tissue, post surgical status.

Medical Massage Therapy is not equipped to manage medical waste so we will not drain any ports or remove any drainage tubes. You will need to go to a hospital or find a local surgeon to have these removed if your original surgeon is out of state or country.

All post-surgical clients are expected to:

  • Have approval from your surgeon to begin Manual Lymphatic Drainage.
  • Have any healing surgical sutures or port openings covered by sterilized bandages. This is for the clients as well as the massage therapist’s sanitation and safety.

Such as knee replacement, tummy tuck, liposuction and Brazilian Butt Lifts. The MLD will reduce inflammation and fibrosis and reduce discomfort greatly, helping the client to relax and speed up recovery.

MLD is recommended after liposuction and or Brazilian Butt Lifts daily to 3 times a week. We have created different series to help mitigate the cost. The series must be used within 45 days of the first service. We have found the best results for our clients have been (3/3/2/1) the first 2 weeks use 3 massages a week, then move to 2 a week, then one. After that you can move to bi-weekly to monthly. Clients will experience swelling for up to year so it is best to maintain and control for your best recovery and comfort. Look at the bottom the page to get suggested products and services for post lipo clients. We do not sell these this is just for your information. If you have any suggestions that may help others we would like to post them for before and after care.

Lymphedema can be caused from multiple reasons. It will cause swelling of one or both limbs after injury or from lymph node removal. If lymphedema is caused from an injury to the arm or leg the cause of swelling is often because the lymphatic channels that move fluid have been damaged or blocked by fascia. In the case of cancer and the removal of Lymph nodes the area will swell because it no longer has a place to go. MLD helps to redirect channels that move fluid to new nodes and make new connections too reduce the swelling. Sometimes this may help to resolve the issue if addressed soon enough but some times Lymphedema becomes chronic and will require maintenance MLD bi-weekly or monthly to help maintain comfort and keep the skin pliable.

Lipedema is a disorder characterized by symmetric enlargement of the legs due to deposits of fat beneath the skin. It is a common condition, occurring almost exclusively in women (affecting up to 11% of women). The cause of Lipedema is unknown; however, there is evidence of hormonal and hereditary influences. Regular MLD will help to reduce the symptoms but since this is a chronic issue MLD is not a cure only an alleviation of discomfort where regular Manual Lymphatic Drainage may help.
