Stiff Neck Remedies

So many of us work in front of a computer, and many of us have nearly no relief from the hunched over position between the computer desk, checking our smart phones all day, and other tasks we do in a position that puts pressure on our necks. It’s no wonder the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that nearly 20 percent of us experience neck pain within a three month period. Stiff neck is generally the result of muscles that have weakened over time from poor posture and/or misuse. The muscles around the neck can become overstretched and overused, even from long periods of driving. Over time this can displace your neck joints.

When neck muscles become weak, the joint no longer moves smoothly because it’s been displaced. Sometimes the joint will catch a muscle by pulling on it, or hit a nerve irregularly, or possibly both. This instant pain will have your body react with a protective spasm. When your body clenches like this you feel stuck!

You should also pay close attention to your pillow and sleep positions.  Sleeping on your stomach puts too much strain on your neck and affects your lower back without enough support. Sleeping on your back is best; sleeping on your side is ok too.

To avoid this stiff neck is proper stretching and positioning. Keep your computer at eye level, sit up straight, and avoid looking at your smart phone for long periods of time. If you are driving, be sure to take frequent breaks and avoid having your neck bent forward for long periods of time. To relieve the stiff neck try these exercises throughout the day:

Roll your shoulders backwards 10 times and then forward 10 times.

Bring your arm over your head to your opposite ear and gently pull your head towards your shoulder. Stretch for a count of ten and switch.

Slowly roll your head clockwise, then counterclockwise.

Lastly, book your massage appointment; don’t live in pain because you think you ‘can’t afford it’ or ‘don’t have time’. You do have time for your health, and the cost is not nearly a fraction of the cost of major surgery which you may need if you ignore your symptoms. Take care of your body-it is the house for your soul. You wouldn’t live in a dilapidated house, don’t let your soul live in one too. We use a special blend of essential oils to focus on relieving your pain, and use very precise techniques to relieve you of your pain. Book your appointment today.
